Jason Thompson mulling run for Catlin’s NC House seat
WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — A familiar face in the Port City political landscape is mulling another run for office.
Former Wilmington City Councilman and New Hanover County Commissioner Jason Thompson says he is considering running for the 20th District North Carolina House of Representatives seat Rick Catlin says he is leaving.
“Several people over the last four or five weeks have talked to me about running,” Thompson, a Republican, said by phone today. “If I feel I can help New Hanover County at the state level, then I’ll run.”
Thompson says he has three or four more meetings with key people before he decides for sure whether to run.
Thompson, a Marine Corps veteran and business owner, last held office in 2012. He left office after finishing fourth in that year’s Republican primary for New Hanover County Commission. His lone term on the commission came after eight years on Wilmington City Council.
Catlin, who is the only person to hold the 20th District seat since it was added to New Hanover County during redistricting following the 2010 Census, is stepping down after two terms in the House to focus on his engineering firm.
Fellow Republican Tammy Covil says she will run for Catlin’s seat instead of seeking another term on the New Hanover County School Board.
Candidate filing for the March 2016 primary runs Dec. 1-21.
