WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — A New Hanover County woman who has lived through some of the most significant moments in modern history is celebrating a major milestone — turning 100 years old.

Born on May 19, 1926, Charlotte Phelps has witnessed a century of change, from the Great Depression and World War II to the rise of the internet and the age of artificial intelligence. Now, as she marks her 100th birthday, she is reflecting on a life centered around family, faith, and perseverance.

“And the Lord has really blessed me wonderful. I don’t really deserve it, but I did get it,” said Phelps.

Phelps, the second oldest of 12 children, grew up surrounded by family — something she says remained at the center of her life through every stage.

That continued after meeting her husband, Larry, whom she was married to for 65 years.

“I got married in May 1946 to my husband for 65 years. I had a wonderful marriage, had two wonderful children, and wonderful grandchildren,” said Phelps.

Over the years, Phelps has continued enjoying many of the activities she loves, including puzzles, Rummikub, Chinese checkers, and spending time with friends and family.

However, a fall in January created an unexpected setback.

“I’m feeling fine for my age. My fall put me back a little, but I’m doing loads better, so I’m hoping I’m on the road to mend,” said Phelps.

Now, Phelps is preparing for another major transition — moving from New Hanover County to Raleigh to live closer to family with her daughter, Mary.

Mary said the recovery process following her mother’s fall was difficult.

“It was rough, it was rough for a good month because she was two weeks in the hospital and two weeks in the nursing home.”

Despite the challenges, Phelps says she continues to focus on enjoying each day and embracing what comes next.

When asked the secret to living a long life, her answer was simple:

“Just keep going. Keep moving on,” said Phelps.

As Phelps packs up a lifetime of memories ahead of her move to Raleigh, she begins another chapter — showing that even at 100 years old, there is still more life to live.
