Kerr-McGee Superfund Site public meeting planned

NAVASSA, NC (WWAY) — Residents who want to learn more about the ongoing environmental investigations, field work and redevelopment plan for the Kerr-McGee Superfund Site should make plans to attend a public meeting next week.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, N.C. Department of Environmental Quality and the Multistate Environmental Response Trust will host the meeting on Tuesday at the Navassa Community Center.

The 251-acre property near the Brunswick River and Sturgeon Creek was used for creosote-based wood treating from 1936-1974. The wood treatment buildings and facilities were dismantled by 1980. The soil, sediment and groundwater are contaminated by chemicals used to treat the wood.

The meeting is at 6:00 p.m.
