Kids ‘Earn-a-Bike’ while learning valuable lessons

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — The 2nd annual Earn-a-Bike giveaway at the Brigade Boys and Girls club is rolling out another exciting event where kids get their very own bike and lessons on how to keep it in good condition while practicing safe riding.

A Bike for Every Child is a non-profit that brings the community together by turning something old into something new.

Founder Kelly Cascaden started the non-profit because she believes there is a special bond between kids and bikes that can never be broken.  “Riding a bike is a rite of passage and every child deserves to have one,” Cascaden said.

The Brigade youth will participate in a two day event on March 16th and 17th consisting of a Tune-Up Day and a Bike Safety Rodeo. During the Tune-Up Day, participants pick out their new bicycle according to the proper size, and take their bike to several stations to learn proper maintenance and common repairs, such as how to fix a flat tire.

The Bike Safety Rodeo will be led by Cape Fear Cyclists League Cycling Instructor, Tammy Brown. During the Rodeo, participants visit several stations including helmet fitting and education, the ABC Quick Check station, a station for bicycle rules of the road and hand signals, and the final station being a bicycle skills course.

After the completion of the Rodeo, participants receive their very own bicycle license and take home their new bicycle and helmet. The goal is to instill a sense of pride and ownership for their new bicycle, as well as educated them on how to ride safely, and the importance of always wearing their helmet.

Since A Bike for Every Child’s first event at the Brigade in June 2016, they have given away over 330 bicycles and new helmets.
You’ll get to see the kids in action during the Azalea Festival Parade on April 8th as the Brigade youth will be riding their new bikes in it!
