Laney football outlasts South Central, 45-42, for first win of season
WINTERVILLE, N.C. (WWAY) — Laney football picked up its first win of the season Friday night, edging South Central 45-42 on the road. The Buccaneers got an early boost after South Central muffed a punt return, giving Laney good field position.
Quarterback Joseph Stough then handed the ball off to Jeremiah Brown, who powered into the end zone to put the Buccaneers up 7-0.
South Central answered later in the first quarter. Falcons quarterback Jaylen Butts fought through several Laney defenders for a big gain before connecting with Zayvian Long in the end zone on the next play.
Laney kept control in the second quarter when Stough went back to Brown. Brown turned the corner, lowered his shoulder and barreled into the end zone to help give the Buccaneers a 21-6 lead.
South Central kept battling and made it a close game, but Laney held on for a 45-42 win, sealed with a field goal.The victory gives the Buccaneers their first win of the season.
