Laney, Hoggard win, while New Hanover, Ashley lose at New Hanover County Football Jamboree
NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WWAY) — New Hanover County hosted a pre-season Jamboree at Legion Stadium, Friday, August 14.
Laney 35, West Brunswick 8
The Laney Buccaneers opened the season with a 35-8 win over West Brunswick under first-year head coach Coraey Houser, who previously coached at New Hanover and Hoggard.
Wide receiver Amir Frazier scored on a long reception, taking the ball to the end zone.
Running back Jordin Cauble later broke free down the sideline for another Laney touchdown.
The Buccaneers held West Brunswick to eight points in the victory.
Wallace-Rose Hill 18, New Hanover 7
The New Hanover Wildcats faced Wallace-Rose Hill and moved the ball on their opening drive, including a big reception by Jayden Holloway.
However, quarterback Ronan Brady was pressured near the red zone and threw an interception that was returned for a touchdown.
New Hanover struggled to generate offense after that, falling 18-7. There one touchdown was a scoop and score from Skylar Barnett.
Hoggard 31, East Duplin 0
The defending conference champion Hoggard Vikings shut out East Duplin 31-0.
Hoggard threw an interception on its opening drive before settling into the game. Senior Quarterback Matthew Boring played 3 drives in this one, throwing two touchdowns after the interception.
One of those touchdown passes was to tight end Nakula O’Connor, who shook off a pair of tacklers.
Havelock 24, Ashley 7
The Ashley Screaming Eagles opened the season against Havelock in first-year head coach Adam Purzitza’s debut.
Ashley found success running the ball but struggled to generate offense through the air.
Havelock took an early lead before going on to win 24-7.
