Lawmaker pushes divorce law changes in NC: ‘Antiquated’

RALEIGH, N.C. (WTVD) — Some North Carolina lawmakers are pushing to shorten the state’s mandatory separation period for divorce, arguing the current law places financial and emotional burdens on people seeking to end their marriages.

Senate Bill 626 would reduce North Carolina’s required separation period from one year and one day to six months. Under the proposal, the waiting period would be waived in cases of uncontested divorces involving no minor children. The bill also includes a provision to eliminate North Carolina’s alienation of affection law.

Sen. Woodson Bradley, a Democrat who represents District 42, one of the bill’s sponsors, said her divorce experience helped shape her support for the legislation.
