Leader changes at State Bureau of Investigation

RALEIGH, NC (AP) — Some leadership changes are being made in the State Bureau of Investigation, after the Department of Public Safety took over control of the agency.

The News & Observer of Raleigh reported that two assistant directors have been moved to other duties.

Gov. Pat McCrory in August signed legislation transferring control of the SBI from Attorney General Roy Cooper to the Public Safety Department.

Democrats criticized the move as a power grab by the governor’s office. McCrory is a Republican and Cooper is a Democrat expected to run for governor in 2016. McCrory said the switch would give the SBI more independence.

SBI spokeswoman Teresa West says the personnel moves are not demotions, but the former assistant directors will oversee fewer agents and have narrower responsibilities in their new roles.
