Leland family moves forward after devastating house fire

LELAND, NC (WWAY) —  A Leland family looks to move forward after a fire ravages their home on Mount Misery Road Sunday.

Fire officials say they responded to a house fire on Sunday morning around 9 a.m. Crews quickly put out the flames that destroyed the inside of the home.

It was the home Michelle Jones’ pregnant daughter Hailey Barr shared with her boyfriend Daniel Smith and their three-year-old daughter Kassidy. Jones said Smith was the only one in the home when the fire began.

“He had lit a candle and he was doing some stuff and moving some stuff around and the candle fell over and it went under the bed,” said Jones. “The flames engulfed the bed and there wasn’t nothing he could do but run out.”

Jones said she is thankful no one was hurt.

“I don’t even want to think about what would have happened. They wouldn’t be here right now, because the house was just in five minutes it was completely in up flames,” said Jones.

This house fire is one of several house fires that have recently happened in the Cape Fear. It seems that a trend that started in April is continuing. According to the Red Cross 184 families had house fires last month in Eastern North Carolina. That’s almost 25% increase over last April.

There has been a GoFundMe page set up for the family.
