LELAND, NC (WWAY) — The Town of Leland is accepting applications for its first Citizens Academy, a free six-week program offering a closer look at how the town government operates.

The Leland Citizens Academy is open to people who live within town limits or own a business within town limits.

Applications will be accepted through Nov. 30. Selected applicants will be notified by email Dec. 21.

The program will include weekly sessions led by town staff covering local government operations, services and the day-to-day work of town departments.

Sessions will be held every Wednesday from 3 to 5 p.m. from Jan. 6 through Feb. 10 at various town facilities. The class will be limited to 20 participants.

“We have seen great engagement with our Let’s Talk Leland series, and we’re excited to build on that through the Leland Citizens Academy,” Mayor Brenda Bozeman said. “This will give residents an even closer look at how local government works and the services Town staff provide each day.”

People who complete all six sessions will be recognized during a graduation ceremony at the Feb. 18 Leland Town Council meeting. The ceremony is scheduled for 6 p.m. at Leland Town Hall, 102 Town Hall Drive.

The town plans to offer additional Citizens Academy sessions during the summer and winter.
