Leland wants to extend mayor’s term

LELAND (StarNews) — Leland officials want to extend the mayor’s term from two to four years.

Currently, Leland Town Council members’ terms are already four years, while the mayor’s term is only two years. Sabrena Reinhardt, town clerk, said amending the mayor’s term would “provide consistency” with the council members’ terms.

“We would not be the first municipality to have the term of mayor at four years,” said Pat Batleman, Leland Town Council member. “Two years is pretty tough, even a congressional election, it seems like they’re elected and then they’re running again. It’s pretty expensive.”
