Local business sells out of solar eclipse glasses in minutes

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — The solar eclipse is just days away and people in the Cape Fear are scrambling to get their hands on some glasses.

One Wilmington store had a large shipment and sold out in less than two hours.

Stevens Ace Hardware on Market Street had 1,000 glasses to sell Friday.

Jim Ashley was the first customer in line who arrived at 11 a.m. to reserve a pair.

Owner Andy Stevens limited five pairs of glasses per customer.

“I anticipated it was going to be a crowd like this,” customer Jim Ashley said. “They were taking numbers at the time and I got number one so when they started selling them, I was the first in line.”

Stevens said he was not expecting this many people to come out.

“It could’ve been ten thousand pair of glasses and I probably still wouldn’t have been able to serve everybody,” Stevens said. “It was pretty overwhelming.”

Stevens says he hopes everyone will be safe during the eclipse and says they will not be selling anymore glasses.
