Local counties delay vote canvass until next week
SOUTHEASTERN NC (WWAY) – All five of our local counties have delayed today’s vote canvass.
The New Hanover County Board of Elections recessed their meeting today and will now hold the canvass on Tuesday at 11:00 a.m. Chairman Jonathan Washburn says they are still waiting on a ruling from the State Board of Elections on DMV registrations. Washburn says there are a couple hundred ballots that may be reviewed further based on guidelines from the SBE about ambiguous instructions regarding voters who registered to vote during a DMV transaction.
Washburn says so far, they have added 564 Absentee ballots. They reviewed 2,234 Provisional ballots. Of those, they approved 587 full ballots and 387 partial ballots. Partial means it was the wrong precinct but was counted for each race from the correct precinct. That means they have 1,518 additional ballots to count.
The Pender County Board of Elections met at 11:00 a.m., but in a news release they said due to issues concerning verification of registrations through the DMV while processing Provisional Ballots, the board has continued the canvass until Tuesday at 3:00 pm. The board plans to meet at 9:00 a.m to first process Provisional Ballots.
Brunswick County has also delayed its canvas until Tuesday. They will hold a protest hearing at 2:00 p.m. and will then canvass the votes at 3:00 p.m. The protest hearing in Brunswick County is over an allegation that one voter voted in both Brunswick County and in another state.
Bladen County has also delayed their canvass until Tuesday. There is currently an investigation into possible voter fraud regarding hundred of ballots.
Columbus County has also delayed their canvass until Tuesday. The Board of Elections said they spoke with the State Board of Elections yesterday and was told everything was on hold until they hear from them.
