Local Government Commission approves bonds for Solomon Towers renovations

RALEIGH, NC (WWAY) — The Local Government Commission unanimously approved $20 million worth of bond financing Tuesday, clearing the way for long-awaited renovations at Solomon Towers, a public housing complex in Wilmington.

The financing approval marks a major milestone for the Wilmington Housing Authority’s plans to modernize the aging high-rise located along Front and Castle Streets.

The 11-story, 150-unit building, which opened in 1972, provides affordable housing for low-income families and individuals in New Hanover County.

Residents have long raised concerns about the deteriorating conditions inside the building, prompting calls for significant improvements.

Tuesday’s action by the Local Government Commission in Raleigh provides the financing needed to move the project forward.

The Wilmington Housing Authority is expected to discuss the next steps in the renovation process, including the timeline for construction and planned improvements.
