Local heroes put stitch in National 9/11 Flag

SOUTHPORT, NC (WWAY) — Some local heroes got a chance to be a part of the National 9/11 Flag during the NC 4th of July Festival in Southport today.

The flag is currently on a journey across America, where local service heroes and the public will be given the chance to stitch the flag back to its original 13-stripe format.

The stitching made for a very special afternoon in Southport.

“This is probably the biggest single day in the history of the Town of Southport since it was chartered actually,” Sen. Bill Rabon (R-8th District) said. “This is the only stop that this flag is going to make in North Carolina, and it has come to Southport on the day of our independence, and of course Southport is the home of the North Carolina 4th of July Festival, so it’s just altogether fitting that we could have it here today, and I think it’s a day we’ll never forget.”

The flag visited Southport thanks to the efforts of Joan and Dick Stewart of St. James. They lost their son on 9/11.
