Local substitute teacher accused of peeing in front of students previously investigated

NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WWAY) — A man who is accused of peeing in front of students at a local middle school was reportedly investigated in December 2019.

The New Hanover County Sheriff’s Office arrested Darvin Bernard Greene for indecent exposure and disorderly contact.

NHSO says it happened Tuesday at Williston Middle School shortly after 10 a.m.

NHSO says students told another teacher about what happened. That’s when they notified law enforcement.

Greene received a $5,000 secure bond, but officials say he has since bonded out of jail.

New Hanover County Schools confirms Greene is a substitute teacher.

Lisa Estep, chair of the New Hanover School Board, issued the following statement:

“The board has been made aware of the alleged actions of Darvin Green and we regret that this happened at any New Hanover County School. Upon being notified by a student of Green’s actions, the school system acted immediately, conducted an internal investigation, and then quickly notified law enforcement. Darvin Green will no longer be allowed to work for New Hanover County Schools. This type of behavior will not be tolerated and this board stands ready to take action against any teacher, staff member, or administrator who violates the law or, in any way, compromises the safety or wellbeing of our students.”

In another statement released Friday evening, Estep says the board learned Greene was investigated by the sheriff’s office in December 2019 after receiving an allegation about his behavior. At that time, Greene was a substitute teacher’s assistant.

Estep says Title IX Director Jarelle Lewis conducted an investigation, and law enforcement and DSS were notified, but the school system was not able to substantiate the claim.

Out of an abundance of caution, Estep says Greene was removed from that child’s school, but due to lack of evidence or substantiation, no other disciplinary action occurred.

Estep issued the following statement regarding the district’s handling of that incident:

After hearing the process that was followed and receiving the full details in this matter, I believe our school system followed the right protocol given the information available. It was important to the Board of Education and the school district that the public be made aware of this prior incident, because we want to be as forthcoming as possible and share what we know with the community.
