Local VFW hosts membership drive in Leland

LELAND, NC (WWAY) — Despite the heat, Local Veterans with Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 12196 and its Auxiliary welcomed veterans, families and community members to a membership drive Saturday in Leland with a sweet treat.

The event was held at Mimi & Papa’s Gourmet Popcorn and Sweet Shop, where attendees had the chance to meet local VFW members, enjoy some Ice cream, meet local veterans, and learn more about the organization, and how its resources can help veterans who have been out of service for a while, or freshly new ones.

Army Veteran Brian Gardner says coming out of service can be hard, but that’s where the VFW can come help in.

“You are not alone, you always have someone to turn to, just like you had a battle buddy in the service, we are here to be that for you, if needed. But if you are just looking for someone to talk to, we are great people, we love talking.”
