Man accused of biting cop at Kohl’s also charged in Walmart theft, chase

BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WWAY) — Leland Police say the man accused of biting an off-duty Wilmington police officer during a shoplifting attempt at Kohl’s is facing new charges after a theft and high-speed chase in Brunswick County.

Wilmington police say Daniel Ellison, 23, bit a sergeant at the store Sunday afternoon around 2:00 p.m. He’s facing charges including assault on an officer and shoplifting.

Before that incident, Leland police say he stole several items from the Walmart in Leland off of Highway 17 on February 9, before leading police on a chase on to oncoming traffic on Highway 17. According to dashcam video released by LPD, Ellison nearly hit several vehicles heading toward the Wilmington area after leaving the store.

Ellison is now facing additional charges by LPD including three counts of failure to stop for a red light, one count of driving on the wrong side of the highway, one count of aggressive driving, one count of speeding, one count of larceny, one count of resisting a public officer and felony flee to elude arrest.

Leland Police are asking that anyone who would have been traveling on highway 74/76 and US 17 during the time of this incident to contact the Police Department at (910) 371-1100.
