Man accused of dragging deputy with car arrested
WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — According to the New Hanover County Jail website a wanted man is now behind bars and will go before a judge today.
Kyeric Tashuan Sweet is in jail under a $735,000 bond. Sweet was wanted after allegedly dragging a New Hanover County deputy with a car Tuesday night.
Sheriff’s Office spokesman Lt. Jerry Brewer said two members of the Housing Unit Task Force stopped at the Kangaroo Express on Gordon Road around 9:30 p.m. Tuesday night. Brewer said when they were walking into the store, they noticed a Sweet, who was wanted for felony charges, in the passenger seat of a car.
When the deputies approached the car, the 21-year-old moved over to the driver’s seat. They said when one of the deputies opened the driver’s door, Sweet sped off in the car, dragging the deputy about 20 yards.
Deputies said Sweet then wrecked in a ditch near the Kangaroo before running off. They say the deputy was treated and released from Cape Fear Memorial Hospital’s ER. Sweet now faces a felony assault on a law enforcement officer charge.
Our reporter at the scene overnight said deputies and Wilmington Police could be seen all along Market Street near Gordon Road. Officers also blocked off an area near the Kangaroo for some time.
Investigators said Sweet had warrants out for his arrest on felony drug charges and probation violations.
