Man charged with second degree murder after fatal shooting on Normandy Drive

NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WWAY NEWS) — A man died after being shot Sunday evening in New Hanover County, and a suspect has been charged with second-degree murder, according to authorities.

On Sunday, June 21, 2026, deputies responded to Normandy Drive following a report of shots fired.

Upon arrival, deputies located a male lying in the driveway suffering from a gunshot wound to the chest. Deputies and EMS personnel began administering life-saving measures before the victim was transported to Novant Main for treatment. Authorities said the victim later succumbed to his injuries.

Deputies then located Carlos Lazo Toruno walking down the road. According to authorities, Toruno matched the description provided to 911 callers and was detained by deputies.

Detectives launched an investigation and subsequently arrested Toruno on a charge of second-degree murder.

Toruno is being held at the New Hanover County Detention Facility under no bond.
