Marine Raider Memorial March makes its way through the Cape Fear

LELAND, NC (WWAY) — Members of the Marine Raider Memorial March are making their way through the Cape Fear on a 900-mile journey.

According to a press release, the march has taken them through five states over two and a half weeks to honor the 15 US Marines and US Navy Corpsman killed when their KC-130 aircraft crashed in Leflore County, Mississippi on July 10, 2017.

Participants have divided into 10 teams and relayed across Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia, South Carolina and arrived in NC on Monday the 23. Around 9:00 a.m. Tuesday morning, the group could be seen walking down Highway 17 in Leland.

The event began at the crash site following a Memorial dedication and remembrance ceremony at the Mississippi Valley State University and will end on Camp Lejeune in Stone Bay, NC, where an End Point Ceremony will be held on Friday.

The next stop is scheduled for 10:45 a.m. at Dram Tree Park, W Castle St, Wilmington.
