May day gathering draws dozens to Wilmington park

WILMINGTON, N.C. (WWAY)– As thousands were rallying at the state capital in Raleigh earlier today, there was a “May Day” gathering back here in Wilmington this afternoon.

Dozens of people showed up at Long Leaf Park to talk about a range of issues, from immigration to the eight-hour workday. It was organized by Indivisible Wilmington, which, along with other groups, put on the recent “No Kings” protests. Payton Alexander chatted with others about workplace safety.

“So we’re just celebrating May Day. We’re celebrating the folks who came before us to fight for eight-hour workdays, for OSHA, and for other worker protections. And we just wanted to do something that brings us all into community, because when we do the big rallies, we’re just working. In this case, when it’s no work, no school, no shopping, we wanted to not work either and just be in community together,” said Alexander.

Attendees heard from speakers, shared ideas, and took part in a potluck dinner.
