McComas steps down from Ports Authority Board

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Danny McComas has stepped down as chair of the North Carolina Ports Authority Board of Directors. He informed the governor of his decision to resign in a letter dated Monday.

“We have a great board and great executive director,” McComas said when reached by phone this afternoon, referring to newly-hired executive director Paul Cozza. “It’s time for me to move on.”

McComas had been chairman of the board since August 2012, when Gov. Bev Perdue appointed him. McComas resigned his seat in the General Assembly to take the post. He had announced earlier that year he would not seek reelection to the House of Representatives after representing New Hanover County for 18 years in office.

When asked if his decision to leave the board had anything to do with the move of the Ports Authority from the Department of Commerce to the Department of Transportation, which happened during the Perdue administration, McComas said he had no comment.

McComas said he will spend more time on his trucking business.

Gov. Pat McCrory will select a replacement to fill the seat.
