Missing fisherman’s body found along shore of Lake Waccamaw

COLUMBUS COUNTY, NC (WWAY) — The search for the missing fisherman at Lake Waccamaw has ended. Deputies say the man’s body was found along the shore Friday morning.

NC Division of Parks and Recreation spokeswoman Katie Hall says the man has been identified as Charles Gambino, 72, of Southport.

The Brunswick County Sheriff’s Office spotted a life jacket on the shore just before 11 a.m. They say when they went to check the scene, Gambino was found dead.

Hall says the man left his house around 7:15 a.m. Thursday to go fishing. His 14-ft Jon boat was spotted overturned in the lake around 11:30 a.m.

Columbus, Brunswick, and New Hanover County sheriff departments are helped in the search. Divers search for several hours yesterday and ended late last night. Hall said the search began again at 7 a.m. this morning.

NHSO used a robotic submarine for the search. Other boats were using side scan sonar but choppy water conditions made it difficult to search.

Officials did not say the official cause of death.
