MLK, Jr. Celebration to be biggest ever

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — To mark the 50th anniversary of the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. the Southeastern North Carolina Celebration committee has planned the biggest week of events ever for the Cape Fear.

Celebration Chair Hollis Briggs says this year the theme is ‘Life is a gift, living is to serve’ and they are focused on youth.  “You can’t be what you can’t see,” he says, “and we want to make sure kids see all the positive things they need to be successful in life.”

Events begin today with a Meet and Greet at the Cape Fear Museum Williston Room followed by a week of remembrances and celebrations.  WWAY’s Amanda Fitzpatrick will be the Mistress of Ceremonies at the Gala Annual Banquet Friday night at the Hilton Wilmington Riverside.

The celebrations culminate with the annual parade in downtown Wilmington Monday.  It will feature the New Hanover High School Wildcat Football team who just won the state 3AA championship.  The Grand Marshall is former Wildcat Trevon Brown who is now a star player for East Carolina University.
