NC DEQ seeks public input on Cape Fear flood resilience plan

RALEIGH, NC (WWAY) — The North Carolina Department of Environmental Quality is seeking public feedback on plans aimed at reducing flood risks in the Cape Fear and White Oak river basins.

DEQ’s Flood Resiliency Blueprint Program will hold a virtual public information session Tuesday, Oct. 6, at 6 p.m. to discuss draft River Basin Action Strategies for the two basins.

The strategies are designed to identify actions communities can take to reduce the impacts of flooding. DEQ says the plans use scientific data, local priorities and long-term sustainability goals to address the individual needs of each river basin.

The strategies were developed using data from the state’s Flood Resiliency Blueprint Tool, along with input from local partners and River Basin Advisory Groups.

The Blueprint Tool is a data- and model-driven online resource designed to help communities assess flood risks and evaluate potential resilience projects.

Members of the public can review the draft Cape Fear and White Oak strategies and submit feedback through Oct. 9.

Feedback can be submitted through DEQ’s public feedback form. Participants can also ask questions and provide input during the Oct. 6 virtual meeting.

The strategies are expected to be delivered to the North Carolina General Assembly in October.

The Oct. 6 information session begins at 6 p.m. and will be held virtually through Webex.
