NC House honors Maya Angelou with resolution
RALEIGH, NC (AP) — The North Carolina House has voted to honor the life and memory of author, poet and teacher Maya Angelou.
House members unanimously approved a resolution Tuesday that remembers Angelou as an extraordinary woman and hails her lasting legacy.
Several lawmakers recited their favorite quote, poems and personal memories of Angelou on the House floor and reflected on how her words comforted and encouraged them.
Guilford County Democrat Rep. Alma Adams said Angelou particularly taught African American women and young girls to embrace themselves and acknowledge their greatness.
Angelou was the author of several books, and won numerous awards for her work and contributions to the arts and civil rights. She was a professor at Wake Forest University and lived in Winston-Salem. She died in May.
