NC judge orders mediation in SBI case

RALEIGH, NC (AP) — A North Carolina judge has ordered mediation between the state and the former State Bureau of Investigation agent whose testimony led to the release of a Raleigh man who had served almost 17 years in prison for a murder he didn’t commit.

The North Carolina Innocence Inquiry Commission was pressing for a hearing where agent Duane Deaver would have to show a judge why he shouldn’t be held in criminal contempt for his testimony before the commission.

But Superior Court Judge William O. Smith III on Thursday ordered the two sides to mediate the dispute within 60 days. He appointed retired former Chief Justice Henry Frye as mediator.

Deaver’s testimony last year before the three-judge panel led to the release of Greg Taylor from prison.
