NC VIPS opens registration for 2026 reading buddy volunteer program
BOLIVIA, NC (WWAY) — North Carolina Volunteers in Public Schools (NC VIPS) has opened registration for its 2026 Reading Buddy program as the organization expands to serve students at nine elementary schools across Brunswick County.
The Reading Buddy program pairs volunteers with kindergarten through third-grade students for one-on-one reading sessions aimed at improving literacy skills and building confidence. Volunteers commit about one hour each week, working with two students for 30 minutes each.
NC VIPS says no prior experience is required. Volunteers are asked to have patience, enjoy working with children and be able to read.
The organization says the program is designed to help address early literacy challenges. According to the Annie E. Casey Foundation, children who are not reading proficiently by the end of third grade are four times more likely to leave school without earning a high school diploma.
Volunteer sessions are scheduled to begin Sept. 28.
To support the program, NC VIPS will also host its first annual Cornhole Tournament on Aug. 22 at AYE! Toro in Leland. Proceeds will benefit the organization’s literacy efforts.
