NC VIPS to host inaugural cornhole tournament in Leland to support Reading Buddy program

LELAND, NC (WWAY) — The North Carolina Volunteers in Public Schools (NC VIPS) will host its first annual NC VIPS Cornhole Tournament on Saturday, Aug. 22, to raise money and awareness for its Reading Buddy program in Brunswick County elementary schools.
The tournament will be held at AYE! Toro Restaurant, located at 1174 Turlington Ave. in Leland. Registration begins at noon, with competition scheduled to start at 1 p.m.
The event will feature two divisions:
- Backyard Division: $40 per two-person team for casual players
- Advanced Division: $60 per two-person team for competitive players
Prizes will be awarded to the first-, second- and third-place teams in each division.
Participants can register in advance through the Scoreholio app, available on the Apple App Store and Google Play, by searching for the NC VIPS Cornhole Tournament. On-site registration will also be available on the day of the event. Organizers say sponsorship opportunities are still available.
NC VIPS is a Brunswick County-based 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that connects volunteers with elementary school students through its Reading Buddy program. Volunteers spend about one hour each week helping students improve their reading skills, with the goal of helping children read on grade level by the end of third grade. No prior experience is required.
The organization says it is expanding the Reading Buddy program to nine elementary schools across Brunswick County.
