New CFCC program gives students hands-on experience in commercial brewing

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Cape Fear Community College is partnering with Flying Machine Brewing Company to offer a 10-week commercial craft brewing program inside the brewery’s Randall Parkway production facility.

The program combines classroom instruction with 10 hours of hands-on fieldwork. Students will get experience brewing, kegging and canning beer using commercial equipment.

Course topics include brewing science, beer styles, flavor profiles, equipment operation, quality control and service standards.

CFCC says the program is designed for people interested in entering the brewing industry, current workers seeking additional training and experienced hobbyists.

“Partnering with Flying Machine Brewing Company provides our students with an exceptional, hands-on learning environment,” CFCC President Jim Morton said in the announcement.

Flying Machine Brewing Company owner Grant Steadman said the partnership gives students instruction directly connected to the industry.

Classes begin Oct. 5. Participants must be at least 21 years old.
