New downtown Wilmington Wayfinding Plan aims to make exploring easier

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — A new way to navigate and explore downtown Wilmington could be on the horizon.

During Tuesday night’s Wilmington City Council meeting, officials received a presentation outlining proposed wayfinding improvements as part of the Greater Downtown Plan. The concept includes updated signage to help visitors and residents more easily find the Riverwalk, parking areas, and key destinations throughout downtown. New gateway signs marking entrances into the downtown district are also part of the proposal.

Planning Director Linda Painter said the improvements are based on feedback from both residents and tourists, many of whom said navigating downtown can be confusing if they’re unfamiliar with the area.

“When we talked to the community, they really wanted it to be easier to get around, to park and explore. One of the things many people noted was that it was hard to get around if they weren’t familiar with downtown—they didn’t know where to go,” Painter said.
