New Hanover Basketball Standout Kellum Brown signs with UNCW
WILMINGTON, N.C. (WWAY) — Kellum Brown, a 6-foot-5 wing and the New Hanover Wildcats’ leading scorer and rebounder this past season, has officially signed to continue his basketball career at hometown program UNCW.
During the 2025-26 season, Brown averaged 20.5 points and 8.6 rebounds per game. He was a four-year varsity player for the Wildcats basketball team and also starred as a wide receiver for the school’s football program. During his time on the hardwood, Brown scored more than 1,000 career points and finished with a 107-15 overall record.
Brown joins a talented UNCW roster led by head coach Takayo Siddle. The Seahawks are looking to return to the NCAA Tournament after qualifying two seasons ago, but missing out last season following a CAA quarterfinal loss to Campbell University.
When asked about his future at Trask Coliseum, Brown said, “I’m extremely excited. I’m right here with my family. My support system can come see me play. I started with the team today, and it’s a great group with a lot of veteran guys who can help me.”
Kirk Angel, the longtime head coach of New Hanover boys basketball, praised Brown both as a player and a person.
“He’s had a very distinguished career at New Hanover,” Angel said. “But what I’m most proud of is that he’s a better person than he is a player.”
Angel has served as head coach of the New Hanover boys basketball program since 2008.
It remains unclear what role Brown will play during his freshman season. When asked about his goals for the upcoming year, Brown said he wants to get stronger and play with more physicality.
