New Hanover Co. Commission candidates square off in forum
WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Candidates for New Hanover County Commission aired their views in a forum tonight. The four candidates are competing for two open seats on the commission. The forum was sponsored by WHQR and WWAY.
The candidates talked about developing a strong economy in our area and their different ideas for doing just that. They also touched on things like Titan Cement and the New Hanover County Landfill.
Their one point of agreement: they all want your vote.
“New Hanover County needs a strong, diverse, growing economy. We can’t tax our way into prosperity,” Republican Dr. Derrick Hickey said.
“You know growth is good, but growth comes with problems,” Democrat Patricia Spear said. “It comes with educational problems, transportation problems, housing problems.”
“I wanna bring a balanced economy and jobs to New Hanover County,” Republican Skip Watkins said. “I’m going to do everything in my power to keep your taxes as low as possible.”
“We need a plan for the future,” Democrat Rob Zapple said. “We need a plan for growth. We need a plan for smart growth.”
