New Hanover and Brunswick Co. schools announce make-up days
WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — The New Hanover County School Board met Tuesday night to discuss a number of topics, including when schools will make up the days missed due to inclement weather.
The School Board voted to approve January 26, May 8, and June 8 as make-up days. Year-Round Schools: No Make-up Days. Wilmington Early College High School: February 23, March 7, and May 24. Isaac Bear Early College High School: March 9, May 24, and May 25. SEA-Tech: February 23, April 13, and June 4. Pre-K: May 8, and June 7.
New Hanover County Schools Superintendent Dr. Tim Markley said it can be difficult to come up with make-up days because there is a tight window on the school calendar, and that current calendar law says school can’t go past a certain date.
“We have enough hours, that we can make up 3 of the 4, so you saw the days we’ve chosen,” Markley said. “We’re going to eliminate a work day, we’re going to add a day at the end of the year. And so that’s how we’re getting to those makeup days.”
Markley added that make-up days on Saturdays or during Spring Break typically do not have high attendance.
The Board has approved make-up days due to last week’s snowstorm. Student make-up days will be as follows: Fri. 1/26; Tues. 5/8 and Fri. 6/8.
