New Hanover County Board of Education extends superintendent’s contract through unanimous vote
WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — The New Hanover County Board of Education has unanimously voted to extend Superintendent Dr. Christopher Barnes’ employment contract by one year, reaffirming its confidence in his leadership and the district’s long-term direction.
The board approved the extension in a 6-0 vote, citing continued progress on the district’s strategic priorities, including academic achievement, employee engagement, transparency, school safety and community partnerships.
Board Chair Pete Wildeboer said the unanimous decision reflects the board’s confidence in Barnes’ leadership and the district’s momentum.
“Dr. Barnes has led New Hanover County Schools with integrity, transparency, and a steadfast commitment to student success,” Wildeboer said in a news release. “In a relatively short period of time, we have seen measurable gains in academic performance and an overwhelming improvement in our district’s culture.”
Wildeboer also pointed to improvements in this year’s Teacher Working Conditions Survey, saying the results showed progress across nearly every category and reflected a stronger, more supportive environment for district employees.
Barnes thanked the board for its continued support, saying the extension recognizes the work being done throughout the school district.
“I am honored by the Board’s confidence and grateful for the opportunity to continue serving the students, employees, families, and community of New Hanover County,” Barnes said. “This extension is not about one individual; it reflects the incredible work taking place every day across our 45 schools and district departments.”
Barnes said he remains committed to the district’s goal of becoming “1% Better Every Day” while creating opportunities for every student to succeed.
According to the district, the contract extension will provide continuity in leadership as New Hanover County Schools continues implementing its strategic plan, supporting employees and advancing initiatives aimed at improving student outcomes.
