New Hanover County Commissioners approve partnership for Government Center redevelopment

NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WWAY) — New Hanover County is moving forward in its project to redevelop the New Hanover County Government Center. The complex is located on Government Center Drive, near South College Road.

The New Hanover county Board of Commissioners held a public hearing Monday morning to discuss the plans and progress so far.

County leaders presented plans for the new government center, which would be redeveloped over the course of the next three years.

Commissioners voted unanimously to approve the county’s partnership with the development firm Cape Fear FD Stonewater. The design plans show the property will be split into two parcels – the first parcel will be for the redeveloped government center and the second parcel will be sold for private development.

The county says the public-private partnership will help finance the new government center, sharing a timeline for the whole project which will start nearly immediately.

“We would immediately start here in June through January and finalizing the design, completing pre-construction and moving through permitting. That would give us a January 2021 date for groundbreaking of the office building the EOC and 911,” New Hanover County Property Management Director Sara Warmuth said.

Warmuth says the project will continue through March of 2023.
