New Hanover County ranks among North Carolina leaders in new elevator permits
RALEIGH, NC (WWAY) — New elevator installation permits in North Carolina increased during the fourth quarter of the 2026 state fiscal year, according to new data released by the North Carolina Department of Labor.
The department issued 214 new elevator device permits during the quarter, a 2.9% increase from the 208 permits issued during the same quarter a year earlier.
Overall, the department issued 721 device permits during the 2026 state fiscal year.
The quarterly report tracks permits for new elevator devices and other conveyance systems, offering a snapshot of construction activity across the state.
According to the report, Mecklenburg County led the state with 47 new permits, followed by Wake County with 44. Durham County ranked third with 19 permits, while New Hanover County ranked fourth with 17. Guilford County rounded out the top five with 10 permits.
Labor Commissioner Luke Farley said the increase reflects continued development across North Carolina while emphasizing the department’s role in overseeing elevator safety.
“The continued growth in elevator permits is another sign of North Carolina’s strong economy and ongoing development,” Farley said in a statement. “As construction continues across our state, the N.C. Department of Labor remains committed to ensuring every elevator system is installed, inspected, and operated safely.”
The department said the quarterly index is intended to provide insight into construction activity and economic development trends while tracking the installation of elevators and other conveyance systems across the state.
