New Hanover County residents encouraged to volunteer for Sept. 11 Day of Service

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — New Hanover County residents are being encouraged to mark the Sept. 11 National Day of Service and Remembrance by volunteering with local nonprofit organizations.

The Volunteer Leadership Lab and The Harrelson Center are promoting the recently launched ILM Volunteer Hub, an online platform that connects residents with volunteer opportunities across New Hanover County.

The platform launched in July and allows users to search for opportunities based on interests, skills, availability, location or organization. It also gives participating nonprofits tools to post volunteer needs, coordinate schedules and track service hours.

The Sept. 11 National Day of Service and Remembrance encourages Americans to honor those killed in the 2001 terrorist attacks through volunteer service.

“September 11 reminds us that even in moments of tragedy, ordinary people can accomplish extraordinary things when they come together in service,” Rose Tatum, founder of The Volunteer Leadership Lab, said in a statement.

Organizers say volunteer opportunities available through the hub include work with groups that provide meals, mentor children, support families and older adults, care for animals, protect the environment and respond to other community needs.

The Harrelson Center, located in downtown Wilmington, is home to more than 40 nonprofit organizations.

Residents can use the ILM Volunteer Hub to browse local volunteer opportunities and sign up for service projects.
