New Hanover County residents encouraged to volunteer through new online platform

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — New Hanover County residents are being encouraged to honor the September 11 National Day of Service and Remembrance by volunteering in the community.

Residents can find local volunteer opportunities through the newly launched ILM Volunteer Hub, a free online platform connecting people with nonprofit organizations throughout New Hanover County.

The platform launched in July and was created by The Volunteer Leadership Lab in partnership with The Harrelson Center. It allows residents to search volunteer opportunities based on interests, skills, availability, neighborhood or organization.

Available opportunities can include one-time service projects, family volunteer activities, corporate team projects and ongoing volunteer commitments.

The September 11 National Day of Service and Remembrance encourages Americans to honor those who died in the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks through community service.

“September 11 reminds us that even in moments of tragedy, ordinary people can accomplish extraordinary things when they come together in service,” said Rose Tatum, founder of The Volunteer Leadership Lab.

“Volunteers are one of the greatest assets our nonprofit community has,” said Meade Van Pelt, executive director of The Harrelson Center.

Local nonprofits rely on volunteers for a variety of services, including meal delivery, mentoring, environmental projects, animal care, support for families and older adults, and crisis response.

Residents can create a free profile on the ILM Volunteer Hub and search for opportunities that fit their schedules and interests.

The Volunteer Leadership Lab said it has set a five-year goal of doubling volunteer participation in New Hanover County.

The City of Wilmington also proclaimed 2026 as the Year of Volunteers in Sustainable Development, according to the organization.
