New Hanover GOP blasts Dawson for supporting Democrat Barfield
WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — The head of the New Hanover County GOP this afternoon blasted Republican Beth Dawson for nominating a Democrat to serve as chair of the New Hanover County Commission.
“This morning the New Hanover County Republican Party was blindsided by the actions of Commissioner Beth Dawson who nominated and voted for Democrat Jonathan Barfield to be the next chairman of the (New Hanover) County Commission,” GOP Chair Sam Ibrahim said in a news release. “By doing so, Ms. Dawson sided with the Democrats and gave a 3-2 vote which handed Mr. Barfield the Chairmanship. This self-serving act of disloyalty is short sighted and not without repercussion. Ms. Dawson has essentially betrayed all Republicans that put their faith and trust in her and those who voted and supported her. This shocking action is disappointing and disgraceful. The Republican voters work hard to elect representatives who represent, defend, and promote the Republican principles and values. They do not expect their elected officials to promote Democrats over Republicans. It is my hope that Ms. Dawson will not continue this pattern of disloyalty, and further compromise the Republican majority on the Commission in the hope of self-serving advancement.”
Dawson did immediately return a message for comment.
Barfield has been selected chairman twice before in 2010 and again in 2012. Each time he was the only Democrat on the commission.
