New Hanover High School shooting case transferred to superior court

NEW HANOVER COUNTY, N.C. (WWAY) — The suspect in a school shooting at New Hanover High School on August 30 has been indicted on multiple charges as a judge transfers the case to superior court.

A New Hanover County Grand Jury has indicted Chance Deablo on charges of Attempted First Degree Murder, Assault with a Deadly Weapon with Intent to Kill Inflicting Serious Injury, Possession of a Firearm on Educational Property, and Discharging a Firearm on Educational Property.

On September 21 and 23 a pair of hearings — which were closed to the public at the request of the juvenile Deablo — were conducted regarding the shooting.

After receiving the testimony of 11 witnesses, the judge found probable cause and transferred the case to Superior Court.

The decision was appealed by the defendant and an appeal was heard, but the original decision to transfer the case was upheld.

Deablo’s next court date is November 8, 2021.
