New lightning alert system on UNCW’s campus

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — It’s the start of a new school year at UNC Wilmington. Along with new classes, students also have a new alert system in place.

UNCW has installed lightning detectors at the multipurpose fields off Riegel Road and Hamilton Drive and near the student recreation center outdoor pool.

When lightning is detected within 10 miles of campus, horns will sound in ten second bursts.

The school says this will help evacuate fields and swimming pools more quickly.

Students say it is something they never even thought of.

“It’d definitely be really helpful to know when it’s necessary to evacuate, if it’s actually that serious,” said UNCW Junior Mrugesh Lavani. “I think when people are just walking around, they’re not really going to realize that it’s a threat or anything like that.”

As well as horns, the devices include strobes that flash until the all-clear signal is given.

UNCW says the weather detection system will be used only when there are programs scheduled on the recreation fields or when the pool is in use.
