New Oregon governor means NC’s Marshall to lead association
RALEIGH, NC (AP) — The elevation of Oregon’s secretary of state to become the next governor means a news leadership post for North Carolina Secretary of State Elaine Marshall.
Marshall has become president of the National Association of Secretaries of State at least for the next five months. The association’s board elected Marshall as Oregon’s Kate Brown was sworn in as governor Wednesday following the resignation of John Kitzhaber in the wake of an ethics scandal.
Association rules require the replacement by an executive board member with the same party affiliation. Marshall and Brown are both Democrats. Marshall serves out Brown’s term of office ending in July.
Marshall has been secretary of state since 1997 and is the longest serving member of the North Carolina Council of State.
