New road for community on top of transportation bond list
WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — With only one way in and out, the Love Grove community knows all too well that infrastructure in Wilmington is in desperate need of a facelift. But that is about to change and a new street is going to be put in, thanks to the Transportation Bond that passed in the November 2014 election.
Love Grove is at the top of the list of projects this year. That’s according to a list released by the City of Wilmington this week. Residents say after a train derailed in 2013, this new road is an answered prayer.
“I believe that it’s a blessing because then people will not have an excuse to say well I couldn’t get to my job because a train was across the track,” Lynda McMillan said. “Or, an emergency vehicle will not have a problem getting into the community in case of fires or in case of some illness.”
City Spokeswoman Malissa Talbert said part of the reason this project was put on the top of the list is because it will take the longest to plan and complete. The project is set to be headed by Wilmington contractor Ronald Sparks, who has worked with the Love Grove community through the whole process.
“We are looking forward to Mr. Ronald Sparks being the one to build our new access out because he is the one that brought the plan before the city council,” McMillan said.
Talbert added there will be significant planning that will need to go into the project because they are not simply revamping old infrastructure.
No word on a completion date for the new road.
