New Wawa opens as chain continues New Hanover County expansion
WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Wawa has opened its second New Hanover County location, continuing the convenience store chain’s expansion in the Wilmington area.
The new store opened Thursday following a ribbon-cutting ceremony and grand opening celebration.
The county’s first Wawa opened on Carolina Beach Road in May.

A large crowd gathered outside the new convenience store for the opening, where customers received free coffee, T-shirts and other giveaways.
Some customers said the opening was especially meaningful because of their ties to the Northeast, where Wawa has a larger presence.
“I’m originally from Pennsylvania, so being from there I really miss having Wawas around, and I was really excited to see a piece of home come to Wilmington,” customer Brian Johnson said. “I’ve been down here since 2014, so just real excited to have it here. Go Phils, Go Birds!”
As part of the opening celebration, Wilmington firefighters and law enforcement officers competed in a Hoagies for Heroes contest to see which team could make the most hoagies in two minutes.
The fire department won the competition, but Wawa donated $1,000 to each organization for charities of their choice.
Several elected officials also attended the opening, including New Hanover County Commissioners Rob Zapple and LeAnn Pierce, Wilmington City Councilwoman Salette Andrews and state Rep. Deb Butler.
A third Wawa location in New Hanover County is under construction in Scotts Hill. Wilmington City Council has also approved a rezoning request connected to a fourth location.
The S. 17th street location will offer free coffee through Sunday.
