New Hanover Co. School Board nominees talk moving forward

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — There weren’t many people at the New Hanover County Government Center watching the election results come in Tuesday night, but those that were there were very passionate.

All the New Hanover County School Board candidates we spoke with have hopes of improving schools and helping students, but Democratic candidate Sandra Leigh said she thinks they need to change the dynamic of the school board and the democrats need to win all three seats.

“If we want a real change we have to work together to make those positions democratic in November,” Leigh said.

For Emma Saunders, who got the most votes in the Democratic field, the primary results mean moving forward and focusing on key issues.

“My number one is county wide Pre-K, because I firmly believe that that’s where it begins. It’s that first 2,000 days,” Saunders said.

Those that won last night will be continuing their campaigns to the general election on November 8.

Lisa Estep, David Wortman and Jeannette Nichols won for the Republicans, and Emma Saunders, Sandra Leigh and Kevin Spears for the Democrats.
