NHSO: Driver in chase that ended with suspect’s death due in court

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — A man accused of driving the car involved in a police chase Sunday that ended with the death of the suspect wanted for shooting a deputy is due in court today.

Vincent Albert Joyner, 39, is charged with accessory after the fact and speeding to elude arrest. The New Hanover County Sheriff’s Office says Joyner drove the car carrying Brandon Smith Sunday that led officers on a chase. Smith, wanted for shooting NHSO Det. Michael Spencer Thursday in Creekwood, was shot and killed around 4:30 p.m. near Fulbright Road and Carl Seitter Drive in northern New Hanover County.

According to the NC Department of Corrections website, Joyner spent nearly a decade in prison after being convicted of a 2000 second-degree murder in Brunswick County.

Joyner is in jail under $500,000 bond.
