No camping changes at Freeman Park yet

CAROLINA BEACH, NC (WWAY) — Carolina Beach’s Town Council decided not to take any action on proposed camping restrictions at Freeman Park.

Dozens of folks turned out to discuss proposed restrictions to require campers to obtain permits to stay the night in the park. Those proposed restrictions would limit the number of campers and where they could camp.

Folks against the plan say it would hurt locals and tourists at Carolina Beach.

“It’s a little bit over the edge when last year they said on Memorial Day weekend there was over 800 campers and now your gonna take it down to 91 or 92,” said Chuck Dunlap, who is opposed to the changes. “What are all these people going to do when they show up Memorial Day or Labor Day weekend?”

Town Council signaled they did not like the language in the proposed town ordinance and asked Town Manager Michael Kramer to review it and bring it back to them at their next meeting.
