No timeline for Carolina Beach Publix after court appeal
WILMINGTON, NC (StarNews) — After the developer of a long-proposed Harris Teeter appealed a judge’s decision to allow a competing grocery store in Carolina Beach, there is no timeline for the island to get a second grocer.
Back in January, Carolina Beach Town Council approved a plan by GHK Cape Fear Development to demolish 34-year-old Federal Point Shopping Center, including the vacant Cinema 4 movie theater. The center would be replaced by a three-building shopping center, anchored by a 51,469-square-foot grocery store, likely a Publix.
On April 24, Jubilee Carolina LLC, the developer behind a planned Harris Teeter at 1000 Lake Park Blvd. next door, sued the town to stop GHK’s conditional use permit. GHK’s plans would not have included a driveway to the neighboring Harris Teeter, leaving it with just one entrance and triggering a redesign of the project.
